So Grateful for Help

Story_-Wilma

Maria Torres has been living in Lorain for 19 years. At times, she worked three part-time jobs, but it still was hard to make ends meet. She has been taking care of a disabled husband and brother for several years, and made her way to Second Harvest’s Mobile Pantry at the VFW in Lorain for the first time. “There were times I had to not pay a bill so I could get food for my family. This is such a help.” Maria’s friend, Wilma Mercado, came with her to the VFW distribution. Wilma and her family came to Lorain after the hurricane devastated Puerto Rico in 2017. Wilma’s husband is employed but they really need two incomes to thrive. Wilma can’t find a job that covers the cost for day care for their three children.

School Pantry Program

boys

The School Pantry Program is designed to alleviate child hunger through the provision of food to children, their families, and the immediate school community. Our mobile markets, located at seven area middle schools, are intended to provide a more readily accessible source of food assistance to low-income students and their families. These markets have proven to provide greater assistance than the BackPack program, at an equal or lower cost. School Pantries serve entire families and increase the amount of fresh food and protein entering homes.

Summer Mobile Pantry Distributions

My-Post-9

Families who are struggling to make ends meet already rely on the school system's free/reduced meal programs to provide healthy and nutritious food for their kids when school is in session. But what about when school is not in session; including weekends, holiday breaks, and summer? Where do families turn during those trying times? That was part of the thought process we went through when piloting our School Pantry Program.

Schools are at the center of many activities in the community, so it only makes sense to work with schools to provide food to children and their families right at the school. During the 2018/2019 school year, Second Harvest piloted the three School Pantry Programs at Lorain City Schools, Clearview Local Schools, and Midview School District.

Second Harvest is excited to announce, due to the School Pantry Program's success, that we will are continuing our partnerships with all three school districts throughout the summer months. If you know of someone struggling with hunger, please share our upcoming Summer Mobile Food Distributions located under the Find Help section on our website!
