Have you always wanted to help out at Second Harvest but couldn’t fit it into your weekdays? We’ve expanded our volunteer options to include one Saturday per month beginning this Saturday. So think about joining us!
Beginning this Saturday, February 6, between 8AM and 4PM, we will now have volunteer shifts of two and four hours. We are calling this new program First Saturday Volunteers. We can accept group sizes of up to 20 people at time. You will need to contact Steven Ward, Volunteer Coordinator, here or by phone at 440-444-0689 to schedule. The next scheduled Saturday will be March 5, from 8AM-4PM.
Since we moved into our new building, our volunteer numbers are up by about 25%. Because of the added space to put in more efficient systems, the volunteer production is up nearly 50%. That is good news because it means more food is getting out to those who need it quicker. According to Steven Ward, this is an addition his department has anticipated, “We knew that we would need to increase our hours to move through the added product we’ve received and we understand that weekdays don’t always work out for some who want to help out. So rolling First Saturday Volunteers out for one Saturday each month is hopefully an ideal solution for all.”
This week, the volunteers will be working to sort 20 pallets of product from Giant Eagle. “We are grateful to work with our retail partners in the area," Steven says. “It is a great way to help those in need instead of throwing away product that is still usable.” For more information about First Saturday Volunteers, click here.
