As we honor veterans on November 11th, it may be shocking to learn that more than 1 in 4 local households seeking food assistance from Second Harvest contain a veteran or an active member of the military.

Some of our own dedicated volunteers at Second Harvest are proud veterans of the U.S. military. Mike Brewer retired from the Navy after 25 years of service which began in the Vietnam era through the Gulf War. He has volunteered at Second Harvest since 2009 and is currently committed to helping sort meat so those in need can access more protein. He was the first recipient of the Jimmy L. Davis Spirit of Community Award at Second Harvest in 2012.  Tom Jewell served in the Air Force and was stationed in Greece in the late 1960’s doing Morse Code signal intercepts protecting our airspace. He has been a volunteer here since 2007 and was also awarded the prestigious Jimmy L. Davis Spirit of Community Award in 2013. Tommie Bradley served in the army during Vietnam in 1967-68 and has been a faithful volunteer helping to assemble backpacks for children. He has served as a volunteer since 2010.

Today these vets have a new mission, taking care of their brothers and sisters in arms who struggle to make ends meet, and continue their mission to serve. Thank you to all of our veterans for your service!
