Celebrating Our Volunteers! April is National Volunteer Month

Last year over 2,000 volunteers handled over 1.3 million pounds of product, filled 50,000 backpacks for children, and filled 3,500 Mobile Pantry boxes. Needless to say, we could not serve our community without the dedication of our volunteers.

Each year we give the Jimmy L. Davis Spirit of Community Award to deserving volunteer or volunteers who exemplify the commitment of our late board member. In 2014, two special people were selected for this honor: Tom and Linda Buswell. Tom and Linda have been volunteering with Second Harvest since 2011 and have together served nearly 600 hours. Each Tuesday they sort and repackage donations, and their group sorts about 6,000 pounds of meat each week, and it doesn’t stop there! They also volunteer throughout the summer at our Farmer’s Markets, and are active in volunteering with Elyria Community United Methodist Church’s food pantry, and North Ridgeville Community Care’s community garden.

Tom and Linda shared: “During our working years, we never had enough time and we always said that when we retire, this is what we are going to do. We have been blessed and really wanted to give back.” Thank you, Tom & Linda for your commitment to making a difference in our community!

Our annual volunteer celebration will take place on July 22 in our new Nordson Food Distribution Center. At that time, we will award the 2015 Jimmy L. Davis Spirit of Community Award for 2015 as well as celebrate and honor all of our volunteers. Read more about the Jimmy L. Davis Spirit of Community Award.
