As we head into the holiday weekend, many of us are lucky to spend time with our families and friends and enjoy bountiful holiday meals. It is at times like these I am especially grateful for a meal on the table and a family to share it with, but I think of our neighbors in need who may not have a meal for their family on a holiday, or any day.

Celebrating Our Volunteers! April is National Volunteer Month

Last year over 2,000 volunteers handled over 1.3 million pounds of product, filled 50,000 backpacks for children, and filled 3,500 Mobile Pantry boxes. Needless to say, we could not serve our community without the dedication of our volunteers.

Second Harvest Serving Seniors with New Program

We are excited to announce that we have been awarded the ability to administer The Senior Box Program, officially known as the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which is a federally funded program.   There are only two counties in Northeast Ohio currently targeted for the CSFP: Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. The purpose of the CSFP is to improve the health of low-income elderly population by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA foods. We are providing 283 monthly boxes, which are 40-50 pounds each, of nutritionally complete food which will include protein, cereals, rice, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Seniors that are eligible for this program must be age 60 or older and living on no more than 130% of the Federal Poverty Level ($15,301 for one person).

Fight Hunger. Spark Change at Walmart

Beginning April 6th, Walmart is teaming up with some of America’s favorite food manufacturers to fight hunger and spark change. Through the 2015 Fight Hunger Spark Change campaign, the public can raise money for Feeding America member food banks through three easy ways: in-store purchase, checkout line donations, and social media.

Note from Julie: Growing Hope, Spring is Almost Here

It is hard to believe that the first day of spring is just a few weeks away after the particularly frigid February that we have endured. The sub-zero temperatures that have plagued our region over the last several weeks serve as a stark reminder of the commitment of our staff, volunteers, and partner charities that serve our neighbors in need. Each day our drivers are delivering trucks full of food to our partners where volunteers are waiting to unload the truck. This commitment is especially resolute during these harsh temperatures because we know that there are thousands of people that are counting on us.
