Volunteers Honored

The top volunteer honor of the year, the Jimmy L. Davis Spirit of Community Award, was given to Joseph Geletka at the 2016 Volunteer Appreciation event on May 26, 2016. The top group award, the Harvesters Award, was given to TARGET: District 463 Cleveland West. Gina Sullivan and Paul Kosakowski from Target were on hand to accept the award.

Farmer's Markets Stir Memories

Helen eyes the table of greens and remembers when as a kid they spent summer Sundays sharing dinner with siblings and cousins filling up on plenty of collard greens and other family favorites. She doesn’t eat much these days but it is still a struggle to put together a meal and rarely has she been able include this childhood favorite.

Julie's Notes: Mapping the Meal Gap in Our Region

Last week Feeding America released the annual Map the Meal Gap Study featuring an interactive map of food insecurity levels based on the most recent U.S. Census data (2014). Food insecurity -- or more simply put not knowing where your next meal is coming from -- exists in every county, state and congressional district across our country.

Unfortunately food insecurity isn’t just about food -- it directly impacts the health of families in our communities with higher incidence of high blood pressure and diabetes. But it also affects the futures of 1 out of 4 children in our communities hampering their ability to grow and thrive.
