Julie's Notes

As we move through the coldest part of winter in Ohio, we’re warmed by the building excitement for Harvest for Hunger season! By far our largest fundraising initiative of the year, we count on the community to join in to help us meet our goal of a million meals to families in our area – from long-standing friendships to newcomers – we can all do our part to help families struggling with hunger. This year we are thrilled to have Honorary Harvest for Hunger Chair, Kevin Nelson, Regional President of Northwest Bank to Kick-Off the Campaign on Wednesday, March 1st at 5PM at Second Harvest. Equally important to Harvest for Hunger is our work as advocates at the state level. As a member of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, we are collectively making a request to Ohio Governor John Kasich and the Ohio General Assembly to support A Comprehensive Approach to Hunger Relief, which will provide $30 million per year in funding for hunger relief within the FY 2018/19 State Budget. Planning for a Great Year!

It’s the start of a new year -- 2017 -- and along with all of our friends, family members and colleagues; we put away our bad habits from last year and start the new year with hopefulness! Who doesn’t like a FRESH START?

But a fresh start without a plan will not give the results you seek. It’s the same at Second Harvest, our new year is exciting and fresh because this month we will start drafting our strategic plan for the next 3-5 years following months of interviews and research. Our last strategic plan gave us a road map to increasing distribution culminating in the construction of our new facility. With our capacity issues behind us and time to become used to the new space, we are poised to understand what our organization can do to better serve our community.

The Season of Giving

Pine trees, sparkling lights, glittered ornaments and jingle bells can be found on every corner during this time of the year. But so is hunger. We don’t always recognize it and that is on purpose. Our neighbors and friends who are struggling with hunger often underplay their hardship. They want to buy that special gift for a grandchild or loved one and missing a few meals doesn’t seem like too big a sacrifice….until they have to live it.

We are hoping they know that there is help.

Feeding a Grateful Attitude

Thanksgiving gives rise to a unique way of viewing the world. We are encouraged and even required to slow down, take time out and, of course, be grateful. In our everyday life, we know we are grateful but this holiday requires us to make it our focal point.

In our work here at Second Harvest, we are reminded daily of families who don’t have food every day, especially children. Kids who rely on their weekend back packs for food to satisfy a growling stomach. Seniors who count the days to receive their monthly box of provisions, mothers and fathers who know they can visit their neighborhood food pantry to help get through the month and even veterans who stop by for a hot meal at the local soup kitchen as they plan their next step after their service.
