What is the best Mother’s Day gift? Spending time with each other, of course.! Debbie Reust and her step-daughter, Katie Reust, carved out some precious time to be together which will benefit others, too. They volunteer together at Second Harvest.
Debbie is the Program & Member Services Assistant here at Second Harvest and Katie is a phlebotomist at Mercy Hospital in the outpatient lab. She is also pregnant with her first child. Finding time to get together was becoming impossible for these two, but then, the idea came to them. They decided to volunteer together at Second Harvest on the second Wednesday of each month.
“I read about volunteering at Second Harvest in the Mercy newsletter and I thought this might be just the thing to do,” said Katie. Debbie added, “We usually work in pairs, so we teamed up to get the work done, chatting all the while. It gave us a good opportunity to catch up with each other’s lives, too.” Katie added, “The time flies by! Then, I look around and see how much we got done and I feel so happy about all the good that will come of this.”
The days are only going to get busier for each of them with Katie’s baby due at the end of September. Still, this mother-daughter duo plans to keep volunteering together as long as possible. Thank you ladies and Happy Mother’s Day to you both!
