This week you may be receiving dozens of emails about Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back, bringing together nonprofits, charities, businesses, and communities to celebrate generosity and donating back during the holiday season. Giving Tuesday serves as an important reminder of the importance of reaching out during the holidays.
While a day like Giving Tuesday gives us a chance to pause and consider donating to a favorite charity, it is important for all of us to remember the importance of giving year round, and that the need in our community doesn’t disappear on January 1st. While we work intensely during the holiday season to ensure our partner charities are well stocked to serve the thousands of people in need in our community, we see a downturn in both food and fund donations after the first of the year. This makes the first half of the year critical to the work we do as a food bank to restock our warehouse shelves.
The generosity of our community at the holidays is something that we at Second Harvest do not take for granted. I encourage all of you to remember your favorite charities during the holidays, but also to remember throughout the year to share your time, talent, and treasure with charities close to your heart.
Wishing you and your family a joyful and peaceful holiday season.
Julie Chase-Morefield is the President and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio.
